Taking the 1st step to become a DE&I advocate

In today's world, diversity, equity, and inclusion have become buzzwords. Yet, the reality is that they matter more now than ever.

The world is becoming increasingly diverse, and our communities and workplaces can't afford to remain homogenous. DE&I is the foundation for a healthy society, and its initiatives can help organizations to create an inclusive and welcoming workplace environment that fosters collaboration, innovation, and employee engagement. It's clear that driving impact on diversity and inclusion is a journey, not a destination. It requires constant effort, sensitivity, self-awareness, and openness to feedback.

Starting on a path towards becoming a DE&I advocate can seem daunting at first, but with a little guidance and some determination, it's a journey well worth taking. As someone who's been there before, I know firsthand how easy it is to get caught up in the worries and hesitations that come with trying something new. But despite those fears, I always knew that DE&I was something worth standing up for. I wanted to do better, to use my privilege to help others and make the world a more equitable place. That's why I made a commitment to myself to start my journey towards being a DE&I advocate, and over time, I found some tips and tricks that really helped me along the way. Through my own experiences, I've learned that becoming a DE&I advocate isn't just something to do, it's a way of life that brings purpose and meaning to everything you do.

If you're ready to take the leap, here are some tips that were helpful to me:

     1. Take Responsibility for Educating Yourself

To make a real impact on diversity and inclusion, it's important to start with education. It's impossible to truly appreciate and respect people from diverse backgrounds if you're not familiar with their history, experiences, struggles, and achievements. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to learn about these things. You might read books or articles, listen to podcasts or webinars, or attend workshops and presentations. Additionally, seeking out groups or organizations that promote diversity and inclusion can be a great way to gain knowledge and find inspiration for action. By immersing yourself in these resources, you'll likely find a topic or cause that resonates with you and motivates you to drive change.

 2. Actively Listen & Learn from Different Perspectives

Being willing to actively listen and learn from different perspectives, even if they challenge our own, is vital for fostering understanding and empathy. Acknowledging our own implicit biases and preconceptions can be a powerful first step in breaking down the barriers that exist between us and those who are different from us. By setting aside assumptions and judgements, we can truly listen to others and appreciate the unique perspective they bring. I have found that this approach helps me to connect with others on a deeper level and to find common ground, leading to more meaningful relationships and experiences.

 3. Practice Empathy & Understanding

Having empathy can be a game-changer in promoting diversity and inclusion. It's not just about feeling sorry for others, but understanding their emotions, aspirations, and struggles. This skill helps you build meaningful connections and foster a positive work environment. Instead of jumping to conclusions or dismissing someone's opinion, try to approach them with curiosity and genuine interest. Acknowledge their point of view, even if you don't agree with it, and show that you care about their perspective. By doing so, you will create a safe space where everyone feels respected and valued.

 4. Take Action & Speak Up for Inclusion

Navigating through the complexities of social justice can be a tricky path to tread, and it's no easy feat to take a stand and speak up for what's right. It's a challenge that requires not only a steady conviction to do what's morally sound, but also the courage to stand up with those who need our help the most. I recall a friend of mine, who happens to be black, once told me that he doesn't want me to merely stand alongside him, but to stand up for him. This really hit home for me, and the only way for me to fulfill that request is by speaking and acting out against injustice with resolve.

 5. Stay Open and Committed to Ongoing Learning & Development

Finally, continuing to stay open and committed to ongoing learning and development is essential to driving impact on diversity and inclusion on a daily basis. Engage in moments of reflection, seek feedback from others, and stay open to new ideas, even when they challenge your own assumptions. Use this input to continue to learn and develop, maintain the momentum of consistency, and stay committed to driving impact across all areas of your life. DE&I is not a destination but a journey.

All of us have the ability to drive impact on diversity, equity, and inclusion by promoting healthy engagement in our communities and organizations. It's an ongoing journey that requires effort and practice but yields invaluable rewards. By taking the time to educate yourself, actively listening, practicing empathy, speaking up for inclusion, and committing yourself to ongoing learning and development, we can make real change on a daily basis. Remember, diversity, equity, and inclusion are values that are rooted in our societal and communal progress. It is up to each one of us to drive impact on a daily basis and make a difference!
